Love him or hate him, Donald Trump is one smart cookie.
You don’t get to be a multi-billionaire AND the president of the USA by lucky chance.
I’m no Trump fanboy or anything, but the way he manipulated the media during the 2016 election was pure master class.
By consistently making crazy and outlandish comments he was able to get daily media coverage and out maneuver all the other Republican candidates and then finally, Hilary Clinton.
He also understands something that most politicians and business people don’t get… something called ‘repulsion marketing’.
He knew that to win the election he only needed half the vote. In fact, Bill Clinton won both his elections with less than 50% of the vote.
He knew by repelling half of the population, he would attract the other half.
And, that the other half of the population would become raving fans and come out to vote for him on Election Day.
Most business people and politicians don’t get it, they stay neutral and neither attract people to them or, repulse people away.
They want to be all things to all people… but end up being nobody to no-one.
In the words of marketing expert Dan Kennedy…
“If you haven’t upset somebody by lunchtime, you’re not trying hard enough”.
If you want to attract people to you, you must be comfortable with repelling other people away.
Have a message and be brave enough to stick with that message even when you face criticism.
For me… my message is simple.
