I started my personal training career at Gold’s Gym in Sydney back in late 2002.
My job interview was with the two owners, a gay couple from the US.
One of them asked me how I was going to market myself and get clients, I looked back at him with a blank stare.
I had no idea… I hadn’t even thought about it.
After a couple of awkward seconds that felt like a lifetime the 2nd owner chimed in with… ‘he’ll work the floor like the other trainers’.
I think the 1st owner was trying to save me from myself, but I was just happy to get a start.
So…I worked the floor for about 6-months and hated it.
I picked up a couple of clients but the money I made went straight back to the gym in rent.
So… I began learning marketing techniques to attract clients to me so I didn’t have to ‘work the floor’ anymore.
But first, there are three big ways to make more money in your fitness business.
1. Attract more leads (marketing)
2. Convert more leads into clients (sales)
3. Maximise the value of each client (retention and backend sales)
Most everything falls under one of those 3 categories, so it makes sense to focus your time and energy into the big 3.
I know what you’re thinking…
“But what about becoming a better trainer, if I do more certs won’t more people want to train with me?’
Getting your clients into great shape falls under #3, retention.
Everything else is sales and marketing.
Which is why the best personal trainers don’t always make the most money.
It’s the best marketers of personal training that take home all the moolah!
So, spend 50% of your time learning marketing, business and sales… and the other 50% learning the training side of things.
