Saturday night I had to take my 5-month-old son Vinnie to the doctor.
Nothing serious, just a scratch on his eye we had to get checked out.
I was sitting there in the waiting room and the Winter Olympics was playing on the large TV screen.
As I was watching the Olympics, Eddie The Eagle Edwards flashed to mind.
Eddie the Eagle with his thick glasses (which would steam up at altitude), little training, lack of technical skill, no experience and with no-funding overcame all obstacles to become the first ever long jump skier to represent Great Britain at the 1988 Olympics.
During the build up to the 1988 Olympics, the media portrayed him as a joke, the Olympic committee tried to ban him from entering and most everyone else thought he’d kill himself.
Even though he came last (by a very long way) in every event, by the end of that Olympics Eddie The Eagle had become an international superstar.
And to this day, 30 years after those games took place, he’s the first thing I think of whenever I watch the winter Olympics.
Because of his story…. Everybody loves a rag to riches, overcome all adversity story.
Think about your favourite superheroes;
- Superman – an orphan
- Batman – an orphan
- Spiderman – an orphan
- Daredevil – blind
Or, blockbuster movies;
- Scarface – an immigrant
- Titanic – poor kid De Caprio (O.K, he died but he was still the hero)
- Rocky – grew up on the streets.
- Shawshank Redemption – unjustly imprisoned.
- Star Wars – fighting the massive evil empire.
In almost every good movie you watch, the ‘hero’ overcomes all adversity to beat the bad guys.
And people will always remember a good story.
To this day the most memorable FA Cup Football final I ever watched was when underdogs Wimbledon beat big dogs Liverpool 1-0, ironically in 1988.
And here lies the lesson.
If you want to sell more personal training, use a story that your prospect can identify with… an overcome all adversity type of story.
- If you lost 20kgs, use it in all your marketing.
- If you have 3 kids and got your pre-body baby back, tell your story.
- If you were the skinny guy that got sand kicked in his face but now your jacked, tell your story.
And, if you don’t have a story of your own to tell.
Get testimonials from clients that overcame adversity and achieved the same results your prospects are now seeking and tell their story.
Simple… but super powerful!
And, if you want to learn how I was able to immigrate to Australia aged 22 without a pot to piss in… or a window to throw it out and build multiple 6-figure fitness business.
