On Saturday I was having a chat with one of my clients, he told me he was going to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras that night.
I made an off the cuff joke about him having his outfit ready (he’s straight – but just prefers the gay clubbing scene).
We both had a quick chuckle, but then an old memory flashed back from 2006.
One of my buddy’s was getting married and was having a joint stag/hen night with his missus at the after Mardis Gras party.
Now… I’ve been around the block a few times and I’m no angel but some of the stuff going on at these parties would make a Catholic Priest blush.
Anyways… as I was leaving the party at 6am the following morning to my horror there was Channel 9 news outside filming me leaving.
I looked to my right and there’s a guy walking next to me wearing nothing but a black leather jock strap – butt cheeks and everything hanging out. Then I look to my left and there’s another one, and he’s holding a 3rd by a black leather dog leash.
There’s nowhere to hide… I’m 6’6, a 125 kilos and standing smack bang in the middle of all this on national TV.
The following Monday I get to the gym and EVERYONE has seen me on TV… I’m the butt (pun intended) of everybody’s jokes.
So…what do I do?
I made the skeleton dance.
“Yes… that was me leaving the Mardis Gras after party and yes I was in the middle of 3 gay men wearing nothing but black leather jocks straps. Have you never been to the Mardis Gras after party? You do know that the best place to meet chicks are at gay nightclubs. Girls go there coz they know they won’t get hit on by all the guys, it’s the best place to pick up… you gotta go to the next one.
And here lies the lesson.
I didn’t tried to deny it and spun it around as a positive, I made the skeleton dance.
“Yes…we are the most expensive gym, that’s because we are the best… you can’t be the ‘cheapest’ and the ‘best’ – the two don’t belong together in the same sentence”.
“Yes… of course we have the most negative reviews on Facebook. That’s because we are the biggest and serve the most customers. But, we always make sure that any negative experience with us is fixed right away and that you are well looked after.”
If there are any negative’s in your business, make the skeleton dance and spin it into a positive.
