Yesterday I was having a chat with a long time friend of mine. He recently certified as a personal trainer and was asking my advice on buying a Fitness First franchise.
Now… before I get started – I have nothing against Fitness First. In the last few years they’ve done a great job in transforming their gyms and their poor customer service reputation. I even have a membership myself.
But, to buy a franchise?
Na… no way!
Here in Australia you’re looking at $1200 plus to buy into the franchise… then a weekly fee of $330!
What do you actually get for your $$?
Normally, when you buy into a franchise you’d get all their business, marketing and sales systems, use of their brand name and a non-compete agreement from other franchisees operating within a certain distance from your business.
What do you get at Fitness First?
I’m sure they do offer some sort of basic business/sales training, after all… it’s in their best interest to keep their franchisees paying the weekly rent.
Is it worth how much they’re charging though?
I doubt it.
You can learn most of this info buying books on Amazon, or reading fitness marketing blogs like mine at:
And…remember, at Fitness First you’ll be going head to head with 20 other trainers (franchisees) all competing for the same small pool of members (a couple of thousand if lucky) that have been given the same business systems as you.
I don’t like those odds.
I live in Sydney – Australia, with a population of 5 million.
Sure, there are more businesses competing for those 5 millions potential clients and it’s in a bigger geographic area.
But, by leveraging other trainers that live in those areas and with the use of good online marketing I can reach and help way more people.
And, if I spend $1200 on say building a new website… and $330 per week on advertising then I’m building my own fitness business and my own brand… not somebody else’s.
If I ever want a change in careers… my fitness business can be sold and I can get my equity out of the business.
With a Fitness First franchise, this is dead money. Each week you have to continue paying your dues and you have no leverage… you only make money when you personally are training clients.
If you don’t have a website yet, or would like help updating an existing one, my team at Online Fitness Profits can help you get started.
The first 3 people to respond to this email before Sunday the 25th March will get a $150 discount off any website package.
