Yesterday was a frustrating day.
Have you ever had one those days when you got loads of stuff to do but it’s interruption after interruption?
Over the space of 4-5 hours I literally had 15 phone calls from people cold calling me trying to sell stuff.
Then to top it off, spam got through the filters on the contact form of one of my websites and I had to go through my email inbox 1 by 1 and find and delete over 200 emails.
This got me thinking about the ‘Annoying Pest to Welcome Guest’ story I once heard from marketing expert Dan Kennedy.
Dan tells the story about one day talking on the phone to an important client. The doorbell rang, but he chose to ignore it. But
, the annoying pest kept banging on the door refusing to go away. So Dan went into another room and continued his conversation, the annoying pest walked round the side of the house and started banging on the side door of the house. It was a battle of wills but finally Dan answered the door whilst still in conversation with his client.
The annoying pest then said…
“the shrubs in your backyard are on fire”.
Instantly the annoying pest became a welcome guest.
His status was elevated because he had something of importance and value to say.
And this is how it should be with your marketing too.
If all you do is email your list with ‘Last Chance’, ‘Sale On’, ‘Buy Now’ type emails you’ll quickly become an annoying pest.
Those emails do have there place if done correctly, but overuse them and you’ll become an annoying pest.
Before you send an email ask yourself this question…
“If I send this email will it be worth their time reading it?”
If the answer is no, don’t push send.
Offer your readers some value and you’ll become their welcome guest.
